How to Make Your Divorce Less Expensive

We know divorce can be financially taxing. Here are some ways you can help your Dallas family law attorney keep your costs down.

1. Don’t use divorce to get revenge.

My mom always says, “success is the best revenge.” Of course, like a lot of things she says, this is true. Dragging your soon-to-be-ex through the mud in a long, drawn-out divorce might hurt her or him. But it will also hurt your wallet and probably cause you a lot of heartache.

Get revenge by being happy. The sooner your divorce is finalized, the sooner you can move on and be happy. Don’t use the courtroom for revenge.

2. Get organized.

As Dallas family law attorneys, we often ask our clients to provide us with documents, including bank statements, bills, real estate documents, and children’s records.

We know digging up all these documents is stressful and time-consuming. But if you don’t bring us your documents, we will keep asking. If you don’t organize your documents, we will. Our time costs you money. If you organize your documents and give them to us, it will save you money.

3. Consider mediation or collaborative law.

Most cases settle out of court. Mediation and collaborative law encourage settlement more quickly, which can mean a mediated or collaborative divorce is less expensive than traditional divorce.

Mediation and collaborative law work when both parties are committed to it. When they work well, they save money and heartache. The Dallas family law attorneys at BFS are trained in mediation and collaborative law, and we’ll be glad to discuss both options with you.

4. Lean on your support system.

Divorce is a legal process, but it is also a grieving process full of sadness, anger, fear, and many other emotions. We care. We want to be there for you. That’s why we do what we do.

As Dallas family lawyers, our expertise is in fighting for you in the courtroom, in mediation, in arbitration, in collaborative law, in negotiation. If you are worried about your legal bills, call us for legal advice and vent to your friends and family.Don’t get us wrong – we are happy to listen. We just want you to know that your bill from us will reflect those vent sessions.

There are lots of other ways to make the cost of divorce more manageable. That leads me to our last suggestion: if you want costs controlled in your divorce, be open about that with your Dallas family law attorney from the beginning. While we can’t control everything about cost, if we know your concerns upfront we can minimize where possible.
